Christopher Moore conducted us between September 2012 and March 2016. During that time we started doing concerts people paid to come to (at The Apex in Bury St Edmunds). He moved us on from a fun community orchestra to a fun full symphony community orchestra.
CHRISTOPHER MOORE BA, FRCO(CHM.), FTCL, ADCM, LRAM, Hon. FGCM was educated in Hertfordshire and at Durham University where he graduated BA with Honours in Music. He has had a career as a church musician, organist, teacher and conductor. He worked in schools and churches in Dorset, London, Uppingham and Sussex before moving to Cambridge in 1986 firstly as Director of Music at Great St Mary's (the University Church), and later as Director of Music at the Church of Our Lady and the English Martyrs. He also taught in schools in Cambridge. For several years he was Musical Director of St Ives Choral Society.
From Cambridge he moved to Sudbury, Suffolk for four years before moving to London in late 2002 where for 15 months he was acting Organist to the Honourable Society of Lincoln's Inn and Musical Director of the Havering Singers. He moved to South Africa at the end of 2004 to take up the post of Organist and Director of Music at the Cathedral of St Michael and St George, Grahamstown, also teaching at Rhodes University. In the Summer of 2011 he moved to Suffolk and is now Assistant Director of Music at St Mary-le-Tower, the civic church of Ipswich.
He has given organ recitals in a wide range of venues. These have included St Paul's Cathedral; St Andrew's Cathedral, Sydney; Southwark Cathedral; King's College and St John's College, Cambridge; St Martin-in-the-Fields, London; Magdalen College, Oxford and the Cultural Centre Concert Hall, Hong Kong as well as in churches and chapels throughout the UK.
In addition to being a keyboard specialist, he also played the oboe until a car accident led to his no longer being able to play. He also played the viola for several years. He particularly enjoys working with singers and instrumentalists as accompanist.
He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Organists and of Trinity College of Music, and holds the Archbishop of Canterbury's Diploma in Church Music. He has been awarded an Honorary Fellowship of the Guild of Church Musicians. He is also a Senior Member of St Edmund's College in the University of Cambridge and for 20 years was a director of the English Hymnal Company Ltd. He is a trustee of the Percy Whitlock Trust.
